Candito 6 Week Strength Explained

Jonnie Candito's six-week program is a peaking block, and its shape is the whole idea. It starts as muscular conditioning across five days and ends with almost nothing on the page except the heaviest set you have ever done.

The volume curve

The clearest way to see the program is to count the squat reps in each week.

WeekPhaseSquat repsWorking intensity
1Muscular conditioning56Around 67 to 72 percent
2Muscular conditioning64The same loads, more work
3Strength24Around 82 percent
4Heavy14Around 87 percent
5Top set for reps4Around 90 percent, all out
6PeakA double97 percent

Volume falls off a cliff at week three, which is where the block turns. Everything before that point is building tolerance; everything after it is converting that tolerance into a number.

Why week two adds no weight

Week two repeats week one's loads and adds work on top rather than adding weight. That is deliberate and it is the part people are most tempted to skip. The conditioning phase is not trying to make you stronger yet, it is trying to make you able to absorb the heavy phase that follows, and repeating a load with better bar speed is the evidence that it worked.

Both lower days carry a squat and a pull

Candito puts the squat and deadlift on the same day rather than splitting them, twice a week, with the second lower day running lighter and more technical. The upper days follow the same idea: a volume bench day and a paused or close-grip day. It is what lets the first fortnight fit five training days without any single one becoming enormous.

It is a block, not a program

Six weeks ending on a double at ninety seven percent is a peak, and you cannot peak indefinitely. Run it into a meet or a test day and then go back to something you can live on. If you want the same idea over a longer horizon with the peak built into a repeating cycle, that is 5/3/1 or the Juggernaut Method.

Percentages here are of your real best, not a reduced training max. That is why the last week can honestly ask for ninety seven percent, and it is why an inflated max makes this block unrunnable rather than merely hard.

Running Candito in Ægir Iron

Ægir Iron prices the block against your true one-rep max and says so when you load it. The bench variations, paused and close-grip, price off your bench rather than asking for maxes nobody has set. Week five's top sets are the only sets in the whole block flagged all out, because that is the one moment whose job is to tell you what you are worth right now, and it is the reading the app uses when it offers to move your maxes for whatever you run next.
