The research behind Ægir Iron
Every published source a number, a rule or a piece of guidance in Ægir Iron rests on, and what each one is used for.
This list is generated from the bibliography inside the app, the same one behind its Sources screen, so it cannot fall behind the code. Most sources link to the paper, dataset or page. Where a number is our own decision rather than a published finding, it is listed under our own numbers with the work it is anchored to, so nobody mistakes it for something a study reported.
203 published sources and 59 numbers of our own, from the bibliography inside the app.

Numbers that are our own judgement
Some numbers in the app are not in any paper. Each one below is a decision Ægir Iron made, anchored to the sources named beside it. It is listed separately so nobody reads it as a published finding.
- Which RPE ratings a one-rep max estimate trusts: RPE 7 or harder, for every estimate in the app; a set rated lower counts by its reps alone. Anchored to Halperin et al. 2022, Zourdos et al. 2016, Helms et al. 2016.
- How far back the Auto training max looks: The best estimate from the last 12 weeks (84 days) of sessions. No published source sets it.
- Strength Level bodyweight scaling: Barbell lifts graded against reference^(1 - b) x bodyweight^b, with b = 2/3 for men and 1/2 for women, references 88 kg and 67 kg. Anchored to Montenegro et al. 2026, Fahey 2026, OpenPowerlifting.
- Strength Level sub-levels: Each band split into a low, mid and high third of its span on the score out of 99; below the Beginner entry is low Beginner, and Elite runs from 95 to 99 (1.2x the Elite entry). No published source sets it.
- Strength Level movement categories: Overall standing = the mean score of the best lift in each of six movement categories (squat with pistol, hinge, horizontal press with dip, vertical press, pull with row and pull-up, Olympic), and the band and third that mean score sits in. No published source sets it.
- Strength Level balance flag: A lift that counts toward the overall is flagged as trailing when its shown score out of 99 is 15 points or more below the shown overall score, once at least 3 movement categories are graded. No published source sets it.
- Strength Level age-adjusted grade: Graded ratio divided by a per-sex age factor: 1 from 24 to 39, a junior curve from 16 to 23, a masters curve from 40 (0.90 men and 0.89 women at 50), with its own masters curve for the snatch and clean and jerk. Anchored to OpenPowerlifting, OpenWeightlifting.

- The same movement on days next to each other (Week layout): Pointed out when a main movement (squat, hinge, a push or a pull) has a main lift on one day and more of the same movement on the next day in the program, in order only, never from the last day back to Day 1. Anchored to MacDougall et al. 1995, Damas et al. 2016.
